Support:

Today I was strolling through the trades made utilizing the Hurst module (but it just as easily could have been any profile I monitor) and I was amazed to see one of my trades clearly shown in my Portfolio as an Open Position not so obviously "open" on my chart. I expanded the chart but could find nothing but "MO" on the chevron system. Sometimes I don't even find that! Now I am only paper trading this account, but what if this had been "real money"?:

Hi Support,

I posted what appears to be the exact same bug here HTTP://www.omnitrader.com/omnitrader/support/OT2004/forum/thread-view.asp?threadid=2651&start=76 Page 4 Post# 17576 09/23/09 just about a month ago now and these posts haven't received any Nirvana acknowledgement as of yet.

Could you please inform us if this is a 'known bug' or if it is yet to be documented and put in queue to be fixed and either way could you please post the bug number so we can follow the progress on its fix?

I'm waiting to go live with integrated broker at IB, but waiting on a fix.

Thank you for looking into this.

Hi Tom,

I had another HCT Trade Plan vaporize again tonight, that’s three in the last week. This time it was UTX.

I wonder when ‘N’ will comment on this bug??? Oh well we’ll just have to see how many pages accrue in this thread?

OT Support & QA Team,

I'm not sure this will help with the Trade Plans disappearing or not but I have noticed that the higher percentage of Trade Plans that do disappear from the chart are often the better performers.

The stocks that rise the most and the fastest in a near parabolic fashion seem to be the ones most effected with Trade Plans disappearing.

Hello,

We are currently looking at this issue. Can you send us your brokerage log for that day the next time you see this occur? Are you trading manually by pulling down the chevrons or using OmniPilot? If you right click on the blue chevron are you given an option to Edit Trade Plan and what happens if you do?

Regards
Ryan

Hi Ryan,

Like Tom I have been paper trading this strategy, but I have 'not' used the chevrons to place the trades I have used the Red Green & Blue entry/exit icons on the bottom of the OT chart.

BTW thank you for checking into this.

Hi,

What options do you get if you right click on the chevron? Can you edit or apply a trade plan? Can you send me the broker logfrom today that is kept in your C:\Program files\Nirvana\OT2009\Strategies folder.

Hi Ryan,

I don’t see any type on broker log in the file path C:\Program files\Nirvana\OT2009\Strategies folder or in the templates subfolder.

Here is the context menu when right clicking on the last remaining chevron MO.

RBN Right Click Chevron

Here is the trade plan after clicking on the Edit Trade Plan from the right click menu from the above image.

How would I go about trying to apply a HCT to this position?

Thanks,

Bruce H

Hi, Tom et al:

FYI ... I am so concerned about this issue, and about the absence of response, that I am calling them about it now. I hope you don't mind my "butting in".

Bruce,

Looking at your pics, the active step that the trade is currently in is a "N bar" stop which are not a level base stop so there are not going to be any chervons. After the N bar stop conditions have been met then your chervons for your next step within the trade plan will appear.

Hi Jon,

Ryan had called and left a message when I was out of the house for a few hours. When I returned I called Ryan and he explained to me that the 3rd step in the default Trade Plan is designed to drop the stops and profit targets for a period of 4 bars and then step 4 becomes active and a Trailing Profit Stop and Fixed Loss Stop get re instituted.

I am glad that it was my ignorance of the Trade Plan set up and not a bug in the software.

Does anyone have any idea why a trade plan might go naked (no profit or stop loss) for 4 periods before activating profit or stop losses once again?

Curious Trade Plan???

Bruce:

Yes, that is curious and tantamount to having unprotected sex in Las Vegas.....

But, like you at least I am glad the software is working properly. I will still have to see if my trade plan has the N-bar stop in it when I next see one of these.

Normally an N-bar stop is used as a "last gasp I'm tired of waiting" exit method ... or just for testing ... it's not normally an interior part of a partial-exit methodology.

Jim & Tom,

I can't figure this Trade Plan out at all and it is the 'default' trade plan when using the HCT strategy. Ryan did say that one could delete step three in the trade plan and then I asked him what was the logic behind step three and he couldn't say. He said that Jeff worked on the trade plan and that posting the question in 'N' club forum might elicit a response.

But HCT isn't a proprietary club strategy so it seems that that this is the better forum to discuss the topic in.

Tom my wife just popped her head out of the shower curtain and said is that you laughing? I said yes I'll fill you in when you get out. Unprotected sex in Las Vegas might lead to a slow death but naked trades could kill your option to traveling to Las Vegas a lot faster.

I'm sure glad this was discovered before I went live with this strategy but I'm still totally puzzled as to why step 3 has any purpose whatsoever. Why in the world would anyone what to pull profit and trailing stops after being in a trade for several periods and then put them back in after 4 periods, what's the gain???

Hi,

Sorry there was additional confusion about this. The N bar exit is not a 4 bar stop, it is a 1 bar stop. The number 4 in the trade plan refers to the Step not the number of bars. If you click on the N bar stop in this trade plan you will see in the Stop Parameters that the period is set to 1.
After some discustion with developers I did find out that this stop is necessary because of what the trade plan is trying to do. If the fixed profit stop is hit then the intention is to loosen up the original tight trailing profit stop to let the trade run longer. To change the parameters of the original trailing profit and fixed loss stops it is necessary to put in this N bar exit.
If you are worried about the trade being unprotected during the N bar stop of 1 period then you can add a fixed loss stop to step 3.

Ryan:

Thanks for your clarification.

Bruce:

I am glad I got a chuckle from you. I like to think of myself as the Jay Leno of the Forums. But I hope my show is going better than his.

Glad to see you again!

Hi Ryan,

Many thanks this helps explain the logic of the 1 bar unprotected day in trade. I wonder how many trades out of 20 or 30 open positions would be unprotected in any give time? Sounds like a mathematical nightmare.

It might just be easier to come up with a fixed loss stop as Ryan suggested in step three, anyone have any good ideas? Use ATR's or maybe there is a way to use the value of the trailing profit stop the day before it gets canceled by the 1 N bar exit and have it as a fixed loss stop for that one day?

Thoughts anyone? In these days of potential 911's I don't even like one day of exposure especially on a portfolio of multiple zeros.

Bruce H

off the cuff rule of thumb:

fixed loss stop gaps s/b a func of hold time.

hold time gapATRmult
1-2dys ........ 1
1-2wks ........ 2
1-2mos ........ 3
1-2qtr ........ 4
1-2yrs ........ 5

but then I don't play the qtrs and yrs so that's just a wag ...

Can anyone explain why it is necessary to have N-bar exit with parameter of 1 in this Trade Plan?
