I like using the Nirvana Portfolio in OT to track my trading positions. The main reason is that OT automatically keeps track of your current equity (gain/loss) as the stock price changes. There are several issues with the Portfolio that have bothered me for years so I decided to ask that they be fixed.

1) You are allowed to input your commission when you input a new position in OT Portfolio. But...when you exit or close out the position, OT calculated the commission for you. It does not allow you to input the commission on the exit. Commissions from a broker are always a little different than the calculation so on every closed out trade I have to go into the closed position and edit the exit commission.

2) OT Portfolio doesn't maintain the exact same numbers that you put in for a trade. Interactive Brokers gives entry and exit fill prices out to four decimals. OT Rounds these figures to two decimals. So...you have to go back into the trade in OT Portfolio after it's closed and input all the decimals. When you do that OT will not re-round and you get the correct full price. OT shouldn't round in the first place because the rounding, over a number of trades, causes your equity to get farther and farther out of whack with you correct, real equity.

3) When you put in some commissions, in some cases the Portfolio changes the number to a long string of numbers after the decimal. For instance, I input a commission of $1.40. OT changed it to $1.3999999997615814. You may think this is close enough but enough of these again throws off my equity over time.

Also, I track my trades in a separate spreadsheet and would like to see the spreadsheet numbers match OT Portfolio. The OT Portfolio is always off unless I go back into OT Portfolio on every trade and clean up the decimals and the commissions.

4) Finally, a major issue is that you can't edit a short position after the trade is close out. In trying to clean up the numbers, like above, for a short position I always get an error that says, " Invalid Transactions - The sum of Buy Transactions must equal the sum of Sell Transactions". So that trade can't be edited for correct numbers. This doesn't happen for editing long positions.

Actually, this is a little worse then I thought. I found that even after you edit the trades in the Portfolio, once you close and reopen OmniTrader, some of your edited changes do not remain.

This also makes the OT "Reports" (File/Print Reports) - Schedule D, Transaction History, pretty much useless.

I know this is way down the list of Nirvana priorities but I have been struggling with the OT Portfolio for years and would like to see it cleaned up.

Thanks

To purchase tons of new strategies and indicators usually cost a lot of money to purchase it. Further it needs time to find the best settings and best strategies. Something for retired people or people which do have plenty of leasure time. Probably it would make more sense to concentrate on a Performance measure plugin or improved Performance Simulation tool to get the big picture of an investment. I support the approach of diamondjags to focus OT development issues toward a sophisticated Performance Simulation tool and also bug Fixing. If there are bugs there is no confidence to use the performance measure tool nor it does make sense to evaluate a new strategy. An inspiration see : http://www.metastocktools.com/vst/index.html#VST

Wolf,
For retired people wanting to utilize Nirvana Strategies at minimal cost and effort, you can check out www.ltstockpicks.com which is a model portfolio that I've developed just for that purpose which uses Nirvana tools.

Just found another frustrating issue related to the OT Portfolio. You can put a column in the Focus List called POS (Position). It gives you a little check mark in the column if you have a position in that particular security. This is very useful. One other especially useful features for me is when you input a trade into the Portfolio, you will get a little blue arrow to the right of the chart showing you the price where you entered the position. What I am finding out now is that those arrows and the checkmark in the Position column only show up if you have just selected the particular Portfolio containing those trades. Otherwise neither the arrow or check mark show up.

The problem this causes is that I have many accounts and lists. If I am looking at one particular list and have positions with some of the stocks or ETF's on that list that are in a different Portfolio account than what had last been opened, those positions won't be visible on the charts that I am looking at. In other words, I may have positions on various securities but can't see that on the chart if I'm not in the Portfolio that contains those positions.

Solution: Any time you are in a position on a security, now matter what account, that position (blue arrow and checkmark in the Focus List)should show up on the chart for that security, no matter what list your are in or what Portfolio you have opened. Once a position is taken, the position should show up whenever and wherever that chart is opened.

Nirvana - great potential here for not only correcting the current Portfolio issues but for additional Portfolio features that could be sold as an upgrade.
