Here are the instructions for linking an existing IB account to Gar Wood. Please direct all broker related questions to Gar Wood at 512-623-7774. Linking your current IB account to Gar Wood will enable you to make a direct connection from your GXT/Nirvana products to Interactive Brokers. IB requires 3rd party broker involvement in order to connect directly. It is not necessary to close your existing trades to initiate the linking process. No transfer of funds occurs, so service to your account through the IB Trader’s Workstation will still be available while account linking is in process. 1. Click this link to bring your existing IB account under Gar Wood: https://garwoodsecurities.net/link-to-gws/ 2. Click Account Management 3. Login using your IB credentials and security device 4. (If prompted) Verify or change your personal information and click Confirm 5. Click Manage Account››Add or Configure Account››Move, Link, or Partition an Account 6. Make your selection – the typical selection is “Move my Entire Account…” 7. Enter i1110015 for Managed Account ID 8. Enter Gar Wood Securities, LLC for managed account title, click Continue 9. Read and sign the Customer Agreements, Click Save and Continue 10. Click through the next set of agreements and Continue 11. You will get a confirmation message that your request to link your existing account has been placed 12. Continue to trade through the IB TWS until you receive confirmation that the account is ready to trade through Gar Wood. Accounts are linked once a week on Friday afternoon. You should expect to receive an email from Gar Wood on Monday of the following week in most cases. The Gar Wood email with the subject “Password Initialization” is your indication that your account is ready to trade using the direct connection. Follow the instructions in that email to set up a password. These credentials will be used to connect your Nirvana products to the broker. Once you've set your new password, you can close the IB TWS. The broker selection in your GXT/Nirvana products is labeled GXTrader. ![]()

Account Linking FAQ Q: What are the benefits of linking my IB account to Gar Wood? A: Linking your current IB account to Gar Wood will enable you to make a direct connection from your GXT/Nirvana products to Interactive Brokers. IB requires 3rd party broker involvement in order to connect directly. • You gain access to our server version of the Trade Processor so you can eliminate your cloud instance. • You can access to the Trade Processor directly through the OmniVest web site. • You gain access to the GXTrader Trade Away website. http://gxtrader.com/tradeaway.aspx Q: What do I lose, if anything? A: Nothing, you gain an additional level of excellent service. Q: Can I still use Traders WorkStation and IB Gateway? A: Yes, you will still be able to access and trade your account through the IB TWS and IB Gateway if you choose to. Q: Can I use my IB demo account? A: You can continue to use your IB Demo account if you run TWS or IBG but not through the GXTrader connection. Interactive Brokers doesn't allow their demo accounts to connect without TWS or IBG. Q: Does it work for multiple broker accounts / advisor accounts? A: Yes, you can have multiple accounts at Gar Wood and access them all using a dropdown in your Nirvana programs. NOTE: Advisor accounts (aka Friends & Family or F Type accounts) cannot be linked, they need to be reopened through Gar Wood. Q: Do my funds move? A: No, your funds will remain at IB. Q: Does my login change? A: Your login & security key to TWS, IBG, & IB's website will not change. You will receive a new login to use specifically for your GXTrader connection. Q: What is GXTrader & what is Gar Wood? A: GXTrader, LLC is wholly owned by Nirvana Systems. Gar Wood Securities, LLC is the preferred broker. Q: Do my commissions & fees change, if so what are they? A: Please contact Gar Wood directly for broker related questions at 512-623-7774.

This is great news Angela... One question. You state: "7. Enter 1110015 for Managed Account ID", but in the picture you have it preceded by the letter " i "...??? Mark [Edited by Mark Holstius on 9/28/2016 4:27 PM] ![]()

Thanks Mark! Good catch. It should have an "i" at the beginning. I've edited the post. I think I lost it when I was formatting for the forum. Thanks again!

Angela, what is the correct phone number to call to consult with Gar Wood about this? The phone number you list, 512-623-7444, is repeated by Barry in another thread, but apparently does not work. The second phone number you list, 512-963-7444, was a private residence when I called (once!). --Mark G. Subject : RE: TP: User Control of Order Type Posted : 9/30/2016 8:13 PM Post #36530 - In reply to #36526 Good idea, Steve, I'll submit a request for it. Is there something unique about transferring IB accounts that are under the Friends and Family umbrella? I have 4 such accounts and attempted to transfer one of them to Garwood. At step 5 of the instructions things broke down because there is no choice to "Add or Configure Account". I chatted with IB, the chat agent had not heard of Garwood, and I've left a message for Garwood's customer service line.

Mark, Friends and Family accounts cannot be linked, unfortunately. You have to open them as new accounts under Gar Wood.

Mark S., I'll be interested to hear what you find out. I would think that "unlinking" (or whatever IB calls it) the account from the advisor/master account would return the account to the same status as any other non-Family/Friends account.

In talking to Bobby Jersey at Gar Wood (312-662-1272) he said that you must set up a new F account with gar Wood, and then there's a process for linking the sub accounts under the IB F account to the new Gar Wood F account. I have started that process, with my new Gar Wood F account in Pending Review status. Hopefully it will then be a smooth linking process. I plan to move 1 account and test before moving the other 3.

I completed the IB-Gar Wood forms on Sept 30. Not hearing anything from either Gar Wood or IB after TWO WEEKS, I made the following two calls on FRIDAY Oct 14: 1. Called IB and confirmed that they had already approved Gar Wood. 2. Called Gar Wood, and they confirmed that IB had approved, that the paperwork was awaiting the Gar Wood side of things to be completed, and was expected to be done after the weekend, on MONDAY the 17th. 3. It is now Oct 28, two weeks later, and I *STILL* have not heard anything from Gar Wood. Has anybody else had better luck with this group?? --Mark G.

I've had good luck communicating with Bobby Jersey (phone number above). I'm expecting that on Monday I'll be all set on Gar Wood with my F&F account from IB, but will confirm next week.

Interesting Mark G. The way things work on the IB side is that you make a request to link an account to a broker/dealer. IB sends a message to the broker/dealer. They have to log into IB to approve the request. Every Friday by 3pm ET, IB moves all accounts that were approved that week. On Tuesday of this week, I requested that one of my accounts be linked to Gar Wood. IB immediately confirmed that a message had been sent to Gar Wood. This evening (Friday), I logged into my account and a Gar Wood header was displayed on the account management page so I assume Gar Wood approved the link and the account has been moved. I've heard nothing from Gar Wood yet. If I don't hear from them on Monday then I'll start pestering. No way it should more than a few days to set up a customer once they've approved an account. Angela, if you happen to read this, you might suggest to Gar Wood that they provide us with an explanation of what they need to do on their side once they have approved an IB account and how long they expect it to take before trading can commence. I would have expected an email from them as soon as they had approved my account indicating that the account was approved and I would be setup for trading withing the next N days. I called Gar Wood again, and talked to Hugh, who was looking into the matter. He was to have gotten back to me this afternoon, but I still have not heard anything from him. It's a mystery . . . Mark G.

So far, I found 'pestering' is the operative word in working with Gar Wood. Hopefully they'll get their stride.

Just to follow up on my previous post in this thread: As I indicated previously, my IB account was successfully transferred to Gar Wood last Friday. Today, I received an email from Gar Wood indicating the account was ready to trade and that all I needed to do was change my GX Trader password. One issue with the GX Trader password change dialog is that it requires you to enter both your Nirvana user id, as well as, your postal billing code (aka zip code). When I did this using my 5 digit zip code, I got an error saying the User ID and postal billing code was not recognized. It turned out, in my case, they wanted my 9 digit zip code (xxxxx-yyyy). So, if you run into problems with a 5 digit zip code, try your 9 digit zip code and things will probably work. Now, on to fun with the FIX server... For others interested in transferring an IB Friends & Family Advisor and client accounts to Gar Wood, I've found the experience (so far) to be extremely easy. Friday (12/2/2016) I contacted Gar Wood Securities and spoke with Joshua Vore (located in Austin, I believe). He passed my contact info to Bobby Jersey who reached out to me in an email. Bobby handles the new account setup process. He's located in Illinois. We connected by phone and discussed the process, and Bobby sent me an email with a link to Gar Wood's site (identical to IB's website with Gar Wood at the top) where I created a new Friends & Family Advisor account. In a separate email, he sent me a single page form (Authorization to Designate a New Financial Advisor) which needed to be completed for each client account to request transfer of the client account from my current IB advisor account to my new Gar Wood advisor account. So, on Friday I started the advisor account application, and completed it over the weekend, including setting up ACH funding instructions for the account. The Fxxxxxxx account was approved and funded today (Tuesday 12/6/2016). Also over the weekend, I filled out the "Authorization to Designate a New Financial Advisor" form for each client account, and returned the completed and scanned forms via email along with a scan of my driver license. It's a super simple form - old and new advisor account numbers, client account number, signature and date. Bobby and I have touched base both yesterday (Monday) and today just to make sure all i's dotted and t's crossed. Today, I received an email notifying me of account approval and funding. I just logged in and checked the new Fxxxxxxx account. I found a message saying the account is funded and will be ready to start trading next Monday (12/12/2016). And I've completed setting up 2-factor authentication for the new account. (NOTE: The entire website is IB's website with Gar Wood Securities logo at the top.) Bobby Jersey requested an email from me today requesting that the client accounts be transferred now (or I could have specified a later date). He expects the client account transfers to happen over the weekend. If that happens, then moving my multiple accounts from IB to Gar Wood will have been a quick and painless experience. Continuation of my prior post re: transferring an IB F&F advisor and client accounts to GarWood: As expected last Friday 12/9/2016 after market close, all accounts completed transition to Gar Wood and were accessible thru my new F&F advisor account at Gar Wood, and no longer connected to my old F&F advisor account at IB. So, the transition to Gar Wood was super easy. In addition to moving to Gar Wood, in order to use Nirvana's server TPs connected thru the FIX server, additional setup/configuration is done by Nirvana, Gar Wood and IB to connect/enable the client accounts to use the FIX interface. Unfortunately that did not go smoothly (perhaps because of the additional complexity of also being connected to an F&F advisor account). On Monday after market open, I shutdown my standalone TPs, and connected the OV server TPs to my client accounts thru the FIX interface. But only positions held prior to market open were visible in the server TP web view (all current positions should have been visible). Angela worked with the Gar Wood folks, and eventually (as I understand it) the problem was handed by Gar Wood to IB for resolution. In the meantime, I reverted back to using the standalone TPs on my AWS server. This morning, Angela was notified and then notified me that IB had fixed the problem. After market open and all was stable, I shutdown my standalone TPs and connected the OV server TPs to my accounts. All existing positions, including those entered this morning are visible. All the settings which had been configured on the standalone TPs were transferred to the OV server TPs. No additional configuration required. Looks like all is good. Hopefully this will help others to understand what steps are required in the transfer of an F&F advisor and client accounts from IB to Gar Wood, plus conversion from standalone TPs to OV server TPs, and what to look for and prepare for. I'm sure the move to N's server TPs will have been worth the effort.

I had a similar experience moving from IB to Gar Wood, where there were 2-3 days where I really learned to appreciate Angela. But once it was set up properly, again with indications that IB had to make some manual fixes, it has worked flawlessly. For the last 4-5 weeks, my trades are made reliably and accurately with zero effort, and I have to remind myself not to be lazy, as I like to to track every trade in an Excel spreadsheet on a daily basis. |
