So I was running TP in the cloud (AWS) for quite a while. The t1.micro image had ^just^ enough resources to run TP, IB Gateway, LogMeIn, Java, etc. provided I kept up on cleaning up the virtual disk.
But I was coming to the end of my free ride. (cheap ride, actually.) I just wasn't sure if I wanted to commit to buying a reserve instance and pay a couple hundred a year to just barely run TP. Plus I just never got to the point where I felt like I was master of my universe on AWS.
I had an old ASUS 1015PEM netbook lying around. So I figured I'd try dedicating it as a TP machine. (My own little personal ATM...)
The nice thing about the netbook is that it will run 12 hours on battery. (Like having a UPS for free...) It sips power when the display is off. No fan noise. Easy to backup. They can be picked up pretty cheap. And I control every aspect of the platform. (It's very familiar territory...)
So after installing everything, configuring updates to not happen automatically, etc. I have fairly similar functionality to what I had with AWS, but more memory and disk and a more responsive UI. Remote access via LogMeIn. Remote backup via Acronis cloud. 12 hour UPS. Network redundancy via cable modem and ATT LTE. No monthly fee (except for a tiny amount of electricity.)
Is it better than AWS? In some ways. In others, not.
My main point for this post is to share that TP runs fine on a netbook. No need for a full laptop or desktop.
Cheers!
