I am just starting with Omnivest and fear that I must show my stupidity. How does one create their own portfolio? I do not see anywhere on the "Potfolios for Account: XXXX" page where one can create a fresh/blank portfolio. Does one have to start from one of the "canned" portfolios, change it, and then hopefully save it as a different name (without changing the original portfolio, I hope)? (I am hesitant to do this for fear of changing one of the preset folio default values and not being able to recover it for future reference. Thanks.

Under My OmniVest, click on the Strategies link. Enable the strategies you would like to include in your new portfolio. Then click Save As New Portfolio. The default portfolio name will be My Custom Portfolio but you can edit that before you save it. Your new portfolio will then appear on the Portfolios page. Steve

How would one create a portfolio of portfolios without going into picking individual strategies in each of the portfolios? Say I want to create an All Market Portfolio comprising Bear Market, Bull Market and Trading Range without calling it an Account so I can compare this portfolio against other portfolios. What is the quickest way of doing this?

On the accounts page, click on create new portfolio. Then select the portfolios you want to be in the account.

Thanks Gary. What you describe creates an Account which would not be available for viewing on the same page as other portfolios. I want to create a portfolio of portfolios, so it will appear on the portfolio page and can be compared with other portfolios.

Welcome TimL, You sort of need to think of the "saved collections" as being one-level up from where they are created. You build a collection of strategies on the strategies page. Upon naming & saving, it becomes a portfolio and will then show on the portfolio page. Right? Same thing for what you want to do. You create your selection of portfolios on the PORTFOLIOS form. Upon save, it becomes an account. The difference that is perhaps a little confusing is in how you create the account into which you will be saving. For strat collection ->new port, you do that from the strats page. For port collection -> new account, you first have to create a new account on the account page before you can save into it (from the ports page). There's the rub. The number of accounts is limited (to 5 I think). Be careful with the SAVE button on the Portfolios form as you can inadvertently change your live account. Be sure to look at the top of the form to see what account you are working in. For me, I have the one live account, then I just one other "testing" account. I only save the test account if I need to look at a multiple-portfolio collection. That way, I'm less likely to get confused and mess up my live account without realizing it. Hope that helps. and to answer TimL's other question. I don't believe you can create nested portfolios. Omnivest supports Accounts which can contain portfolios and strategies and Portfolios which can contain strategies. There is no way to create a Portfolio that contains other Portfolios. Steve

if you know what strategies are contained in the nested portfolios you can then, of course just add those strategies to the main portfolio and you will then have the equivalent of a nested portfolio. If you don't know what strategies are in the other portfolio, the only way to combine them is at the account level. Is there a reason you want to do that at the portfolio level? Nirvana may want to add that capability if there is enough demand for it.

Gary, my thought was triggered by Ed's Post #27727 in this link : http://www.omnitrader.com/currentclients/omnivestforum/thread-view.asp?threadid=4891&posts=4 where he demonstrated that combining Portfolios like Market Bearish 01, Bullish 01, and Trading Range 01 into an Account that represent roughly "All Markets". It would be nice if we could create Portfolios of Portfolios (instead of Accounts) so we can experiment with the combination of other portfolios and compare results on the same Portfolio page. Of course, the long shot would be to create the Portfolio from the strategy level as many of you have suggested in this thread. |
