I'm not sure why your screenshot tool doesn't work - I've seen others post about the same issue, but I've tried multiple installations & it seems to work fine. You might try contacting support or using another method to make snapshots. There's lots of different software that does this available, like Snagit, or there's the basic Windows PrintScreen.
Again, the patterns issue is fixed in OT2014. Typically, unless it's a very serious issue, bug fixes are only added to the latest version of the software.
