I have just started looking at RSI-D since divergences have peeked my interest. However, my charts are not showing the divergence when it occurs. In looking at the parameters on the chart it reads 13, -1 -1. Not being a pro at this, I think the parameters are not correct and thus the charts are not showing the divergence. Can anyone tell me if I am right and how I can correct it?

This is my first post and i'm new to this so here goes.........I agree I've been trying to use a Divergence system and I'm getting some pretty lame signals whether rsi-d, roc-d, or sto-d or whatever I use. The diverge lines are shortened or instead of connecting higher highs or lower lows they just cut across into the center of a formation or they don't even show up at all on what could have been a very nice trade. Also I've noticed that signals can be quite late. I've had OT for a while and I've only just started to really try to get into it and work with it, although I think I'm making headway Iknow theres alot I need to learn and maybe theres some easy adjustment that needs to be made, but I love this software and I can't wait to master it so I can begin trading with some confidence.

So is it possible to get any feed back on this query. Maybe this has been covered before and everyone is tired of the question. Doesn't have to be a detailed response just want to know if this is the way it is, or if its worth any fiddling time.

Feedback is much more likely if the question/issue is well defined. Best way to define it is to take snapshots of specific cases you have questions about, and provide clear doc's re what settings, etc are in play relevant to that case. Then, someone else can clearly understand the issue and respond to it. Otherwise, it sort of comes across in a blurry way, roughly translated as "I don't like the way divergences work in OT". That's probably not what was intended ... specifics help narrow the focus to something that can be tested and carefully considered by others. I regularly recommend the use of SnagIt by Techsmith.com as a superb tool not only for capturing screen shots, but also for marking them up. All of the hundreds of shots I've uploaded to this and other forums have been done with that too. It's the best 40 bucks you'll ever spend on software, IMHO. FWIW.:~)

Thanx Jim, I'll try to get some screen shots on the board as soon as I figure out how to do that, like I said I'm a little green. I do understand what you are saying though because I thought of doing that in my post but it seemed too daunting and I chickened out, but I'll get on it.

Thanks for the snaps and the notes ... I think I understand what you are getting at. Documentation on these systems is pretty limited, so let me add some "educated guesses" that might help. 1. the zigzags that are the starting point for the analysis are on the indic, not on price. 2. zigzag pivots are not "identified" until a few bars AFTER the vertex, so the signals come "late" as a result. This is the nature of pivot-point analysis in all its guises. 3. it appears that the rules for the signals are related to the underlying indic's value in some way ... not just a bar count or change of value. Not documented. 4. the price values are the Close of those bars - as good a point as any, I suppose. I guess the key point here is that this uses the indicator zigzag, UNRELATED to any price zigzag, or to a price LinReg line, for analysis ... sometimes this is done differently (other software), but the bottom line appears to be that were it not for the lateness of the signals, most of them seem to be pretty good ... that is, if one could "know earlier" that a pivot was a pivot, then the RSI-D would be a great system. As mentioned earlier ... the lateness is a function of HOW the pivots are defined ... Nirvana has not revealed that. So ... hopefully this helps put it in perspective a bit. Yes, I guess you can't have a pivot point until you have a pivot. and it sounds like i'll just have to eyeball divergences when I get signals Thanks for your patience and help in this matter, now I can move on to next quandary. And thanks for showing me how to attach. See you on the board somehere Jim.

admiral, There are several 'N' users trying to find a better way to get signals from divergences. Some have suggested trying to create a scan for double/triple - tops/bottoms as other software programs allow then you would have to 'eye-ball' your indicator of choice to see if it gives the diverging signal you are looking for. Divergences can give some extremely good signals as Jim has mentioned the problem especially for the shorter term trades is as you discovered the signals are too late. There are some amazing signals with these strategies on the weekly charts however. Bruce H

Bruce, I actually do like to check out the weekly signals first and then go to that symbol on the daily and see if something is developing in the same direction. I will be watching the forum for anything that might help with these formations, in case anyone cracks this case. There are a few other things I can occupy myself with in the meantime. I dont expect to learn everything all at once. Thanx for the input and help. |
